Pennsylvania Faces Drought Risks as Heat Waves Loom

With nearly a third of Pennsylvania currently facing abnormally dry conditions, local utility officials are urging residents to curb water consumption. The U.S. Drought Monitor indicates that 15 counties are under drought watch and four under warning, as residents prepare for a summer marked by record-breaking heat and limited rainfall.

Pennsylvania American Water President Justin Ladner emphasized that small adjustments to daily routines can mitigate the strain on local infrastructure. Current data shows that 30 percent of the state is already experiencing dry conditions, a trend that mirrors a national pattern of drought coverage not seen in four years. The utility warns that high temperatures combined with lower-than-average precipitation will inevitably drive up seasonal demand.

To combat potential shortages, the company recommends specific conservation habits such as watering lawns only during early morning or evening hours to prevent evaporation, which can claim 30 percent of water used during midday. Residents are also encouraged to check for household leaks, as ten percent of homes have undetected plumbing issues that waste upwards of 90 gallons per day. Those looking to track their usage can access historical data through the MyWater portal, which allows customers to monitor consumption levels and manage billing. Beyond immediate conservation, the utility suggests practical landscape management, including the use of mulch to retain soil moisture and raising mower blades to keep grass healthier during dry spells.
