Tesla Begins Austin Road Tests of Pedal-less Cybercab

A two-seat Cybercab prototype, stripped of both steering wheel and pedals, has appeared on public roads in Austin, Texas. The testing, captured in video footage shared on X, marks a transition from controlled environments to real-world conditions for Tesla’s vision of a fully autonomous robotaxi network.

While the current tests require a human safety monitor in the passenger seat, the vehicle design signals a shift toward total automation. Tesla has spent the past year operating a fleet of Model Y SUVs as robotaxis in Austin, providing a testing ground for its software, though the company has yet to deploy a fully autonomous system at scale. The company’s strategy hinges on a camera-only approach, contrasting with the sensor-heavy suites—incorporating lidar and radar—favored by industry rival Waymo.

Regulatory hurdles may soon diminish, as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently proposed rules that would no longer mandate brake pedals for vehicles designed exclusively for automated driving. This shift could clear a path for the Cybercab’s unique design. Elon Musk maintains that Tesla’s vertical integration, where the company produces both the hardware and software, provides a cost advantage over Waymo’s reliance on third-party vehicle manufacturers like Jaguar and Zeekr. As Tesla begins deploying these gold-colored, two-seater units, the visibility of its autonomous program will increase, putting the company’s safety record and technical progress under intense public scrutiny.
