British Airways Marks 80 Years of Transatlantic Service
Eighty years ago, a Lockheed Constellation 049 touched down at LaGuardia, marking the inaugural commercial flight from London to New York. Today, British Airways commemorates that legacy by announcing a multi-million dollar investment into its United States lounge network, starting with a major redevelopment at Newark Liberty International Airport.
The centerpiece of the new investment is a $15 million overhaul of the Newark lounge. Designed in collaboration with the firm Gensler, the facility will draw aesthetic inspiration from the New Jersey coastline and local industrial heritage. Plans include a full-service bar, upgraded dining areas, and floor-to-ceiling runway views. Construction is slated to begin later this year, with a projected reopening in 2027. Following the Newark project, the airline intends to roll out similar enhancements at its Boston and San Francisco locations. These upgrades coincide with a broader corporate transformation program, which includes the integration of Starlink high-speed Wi-Fi across its fleet and the debut of a redesigned First cabin.
