Sony Sets 2028 Deadline for PlayStation Physical Disc Era

Beginning in January 2028, the physical disc will no longer be a part of the new PlayStation software ecosystem. Sony Interactive Entertainment confirmed that all titles launching after this threshold will bypass retail shelves, moving exclusively to digital distribution via the PlayStation Store and authorized online storefronts.

This shift marks a final transition for the company as it pivots to meet evolving consumer habits that heavily favor digital acquisition over traditional media. Sony clarified that the policy applies strictly to future software; titles released or scheduled before the 2028 cutoff will remain unaffected, preserving the viability of existing physical collections.

Industry analysts have noted this change reflects a broader decline in physical media consumption across the gaming sector. By consolidating its distribution model, Sony aims to streamline its supply chain and align with the digital-first preferences that have increasingly defined player behavior over the last decade.
