How International Education Shapes Future Industry Leaders

A new report from the AIFS Foundation and the Institute of International Education suggests that studying abroad serves as a critical turning point for professional development. By surveying 44 industry leaders, the study highlights how cross-cultural exposure fosters the leadership skills and strategic adaptability required in the modern global workforce.

Presented at the NAFSA 2026 Annual Conference & Expo, the Passport to Leadership study examines the long-term impact of international academic experiences across 20 diverse sectors, including technology, medicine, and public service. The findings indicate a near-universal consensus among participants, with 98% of surveyed leaders crediting their time abroad for significant professional growth and refined career trajectories.

Beyond personal development, the report emphasizes the cultivation of specific competencies that are increasingly difficult to automate. According to the data, 96% of respondents noted that overseas experiences were instrumental in building cross-cultural communication skills, while 78% pointed to an improved ability to think strategically at a systems level. Brittany Hardy, a policy lead at Google, noted that navigating foreign environments is now a fundamental necessity for tech leadership, enabling professionals to better anticipate how policies land in varied global markets. For institutions and employers, these insights argue for prioritizing international exchange as a deliberate strategy to prepare the next generation for an interconnected professional landscape.
