BHP Targets 20-Year Life Extension for Chilean Cerro Colorado Mine

BHP Group has submitted an environmental permit application to revive the Cerro Colorado mine in northern Chile, signaling a $1.5 billion push to restore production at the site. The world’s largest miner by market value shuttered the facility in late 2023, but now aims to secure its future through new technology.

The proposed restart hinges on a shift in resource management, specifically the integration of leaching processes and a reliance on desalinated water. To facilitate this, the company plans to construct a pipeline spanning over 100 kilometers to transport treated wastewater from the municipality of Alto Hospicio directly to the mine. Should regulators approve the project, the move would extend the operational life of the asset by two decades. This strategy marks a calculated effort to maintain a footprint in Chile despite the previous closure of the site.
