Rivian Raises Annual Sales Forecast as Production Surpasses Targets

Bucking the trend of a cooling American electric vehicle market, Rivian has revised its 2024 delivery projections upward. The manufacturer now expects to ship between 65,000 and 70,000 vehicles, signaling stronger-than-anticipated momentum following a productive second quarter that saw output figures comfortably beat internal estimates.

The company reported building 12,613 vehicles and delivering 12,194 in the second quarter, significantly outperforming its previous guidance of 9,000 to 11,000 shipments. This growth stems from steady demand for its electric delivery vans and the existing R1 line, bolstered by the early rollout of the R2 SUV. The new forecast marks a notable shift for the automaker, which delivered 42,247 units in total last year.

Rivian is betting heavily on the R2, which carries a starting price of approximately $58,000. To support this push, the company has expanded its Normal, Illinois factory and continues development on a major production facility in Georgia. Chief financial officer Claire McDonough previously signaled expectations for 20,000 to 25,000 R2 deliveries, though it remains unclear if that specific target has risen alongside the firm’s broader annual outlook.

Increased volume is critical as the company navigates a multi-billion-dollar deficit. While initial projections pointed toward profitability by 2027, management recently deferred that timeline to prioritize software investments and a strategic partnership to supply self-driving R2 units to Uber. These gains arrive despite broader industry headwinds, including the elimination of federal tax credits and a rollback of environmental regulations.
