Infineon Opens World’s Largest Power Semiconductor Fab in Dresden

CEO Jochen Hanebeck framed the opening as a strategic move to capitalize on the global surge in demand for power semiconductors. These chips serve as the backbone for critical infrastructure, ranging from the power supplies required by AI data centers to the complex systems governing software-defined vehicles. By integrating the new site with its existing plant in Villach, Infineon aims to operate as a single virtual entity, allowing for significantly faster product qualification and production scaling.

The facility relies on advanced digital twin technology and AI-driven process management to double standard ramp-up speeds. This agility is designed to allow the company to pivot quickly in response to market fluctuations. Beyond output, the plant marks a shift toward sustainable manufacturing; it functions entirely without natural gas and utilizes a closed-loop system that recycles 90 percent of its water, alongside heat recovery systems that capture nearly half of the energy used in production.

German Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Saxony’s Minister-President Michael Kretschmer emphasized the plant's role in bolstering European technological sovereignty. Located within the Silicon Saxony cluster—already home to over 80,000 workers—the new fab is expected to generate a significant economic ripple effect, with estimates suggesting one cleanroom position supports six additional jobs in the regional supply ecosystem.
