Metacon Secures SEK 111 Million for Uppsala Hydrogen Plant

A SEK 111 million grant from the Swedish government’s Klimatklivet program will enable Metacon AB to construct a 10 MW electrolysis facility in Uppsala. The project, aimed at fueling local industrial and transport sectors, covers 55 percent of the total SEK 202 million investment required for the site.

The facility will be located at the Hovgården waste management site, operated by Uppsala Vatten och Avfall AB. Once fully operational, the plant is expected to produce approximately 1,480 tonnes of green hydrogen annually. This output will serve industrial users and refueling stations in Central Sweden, where current supply chains rely heavily on expensive, long-distance transport from outside the region.

Beyond hydrogen production, the plant is designed for circular resource management. Byproducts from the electrolysis process—specifically oxygen and waste heat—will be integrated directly into the Hovgården facility to improve leachate treatment and local heating efficiency. Projections indicate that the site will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 23,000 tonnes per year.

For Metacon, the plant serves as a critical commercial reference site to demonstrate its electrolysis technology under real-world conditions. Construction is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2026, with full commissioning expected by the first quarter of 2029. CEO Christer Wikner noted that the site will allow prospective customers to evaluate complete production modules, from initial integration to final delivery, in a functional industrial setting.
