Sky Documentaries to Premiere Amerigo Ahead of US Semiquincentennial

As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, a new feature documentary titled Amerigo: The Search for the American Dream premieres this Saturday, July 4, at 8:00pm BST on Sky Documentaries and the streaming service NOW, offering an unscripted look at the nation through the eyes of its citizens.

Filmed over two years by director Adam Mason and producers David and Julie McCourt, the documentary rejects political punditry in favor of a grassroots approach. The production team traveled to all 50 states to record more than 1,000 conversations with everyday Americans. These interviews touch on fundamental aspects of life including housing, healthcare, technology, and community, aiming to capture an honest portrait of the country’s current state. The film is anchored by the personal history of host David McCourt, an Irish-American entrepreneur whose grandfather’s journey from janitor to homeowner serves as the narrative starting point for the broader inquiry into whether the promise of the American Dream remains viable for future generations.

Beyond citizen interviews, the project features insights from notable figures such as actress and activist Sophia Bush, internet pioneer Vint Cerf, and Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Paul Muldoon. While the documentary focuses heavily on the American experience, it also incorporates perspectives from Ireland to highlight the historical ties between the two nations. To accompany the broadcast, McCourt Entertainment has launched AD250.com, an interactive digital platform designed to function as a time capsule where viewers can share their own interpretations of the American Dream. McCourt describes the resulting film as a raw and unexpectedly hopeful portrait of a country that, contrary to polarized media portrayals, remains united by largely universal aspirations for family and progress.
