The Psychological Obliteration of Gaza’s Children

Beyond the mounting death toll and physical maiming, Israel’s military campaign in Gaza has inflicted profound, systemic psychological destruction on the enclave's youth. A new report from Save the Children details how five months of relentless bombardment and displacement have pushed an entire generation into a state of mass-scale shock.

Jason Lee, the organization's country director for the occupied Palestinian territory, describes a reality where children navigate streets littered with corpses while facing chronic starvation and the absence of basic sanitation. For many, the trauma is no longer a matter of deterioration but of total collapse. Parents report that their children have lost the ability to process the violence, with some minors now capable of distinguishing between types of falling explosives by sound alone.

The Erosion of Childhood

The crisis is compounded by the emergence of the acronym WCNSF—wounded child, no surviving family—which identifies minors left entirely alone by the conflict. Medical infrastructure, once the primary site for recovery, has been largely obliterated. Healthcare workers report performing amputations on children without anesthesia due to severe shortages caused by the ongoing blockade. According to UNICEF, Gaza remains the most dangerous place on earth to be a child, with over 13,000 minors killed since the start of the war.

While the scale of the trauma is unprecedented, experts argue the damage is not yet irreversible. Save the Children continues to call for an immediate cease-fire and the unfettered entry of humanitarian aid to stabilize the region. Without these measures, the mental and physical scars inflicted upon these children will define the future of the enclave for decades to come.
