Claiming your WhatsApp handle: A guide to username reservations

WhatsApp has opened early reservations for unique usernames, allowing three billion users to secure their digital handles before the feature goes live. By decoupling accounts from phone numbers, the platform aims to provide greater privacy for individuals and simplify contact management for businesses in the coming weeks.

To secure your handle, navigate to Settings, select Account, and tap the Username option. If your preferred choice is taken, the app will offer alternative suggestions. Note that public figures and official entities have had their handles protected, preventing unauthorized claims. If you maintain an active presence on Facebook or Instagram, you can link those accounts to synchronize your existing handle across Meta platforms.

Once active, users can modify or delete their handle through the same menu. To prevent unwanted solicitation, the app includes a four-digit security key system. By toggling the privacy setting to "People who know my key," you ensure that new contacts must input a specific code before initiating a conversation. You retain full control over this key, with the ability to generate a replacement or disable the requirement at any time.
