NetExperience Moves Network Security to the Wireless Edge

Ottawa-based NetExperience has launched a Secure Wireless Gateway that embeds Layer 7 security directly into OpenWiFi access points. By shifting protection to the network edge, the software eliminates the need for traditional deep packet inspection, allowing service providers to deploy advanced filtering without additional hardware.

The new in-kernel application operates on compatible hardware from vendors including Edgecore, Cybertan, and Actiontec. It targets common evasion tactics such as encrypted DNS and VPN tunneling by enforcing content filtering policies directly at the access point before a bypass channel can be established. The system includes six curated blocklist categories, covering threats, trackers, and gambling sites, alongside ad and adult content.

For multi-dwelling and educational environments, the software provides granular control through dynamic 802.1X VLAN assignment. Service providers can now offer tiered security packages, such as CIPA-compliant filtering for schools or specialized phishing protection for senior living communities. According to NetExperience President Jack Raynor, this software-defined approach allows operators to generate new recurring revenue streams while improving tenant isolation and overall customer safety. The platform is currently available for deployment via the company’s cloud management system.
