Voters Reject Blanket Tech Bans for Youth in Favor of Literacy

Seven-in-10 voters and nearly three-quarters of parents believe that banning or strictly limiting youth access to digital technology could trigger unintended negative consequences. New research from the Coalition to Empower our Future suggests that public sentiment is shifting toward comprehensive mental health solutions rather than simple hardware restrictions.

Voters Reject Blanket Tech Bans for Youth in Favor of Literacy

The survey of 2,000 registered voters, conducted in April 2026 by Mercury Analytics, highlights a growing consensus that heavy-handed bans fail to address the root causes of youth distress. Parents participating in focus groups across California, New York, and Texas argued that prohibition often drives behavior underground, leaving children ill-equipped to manage digital risks independently. Instead of removing devices, respondents overwhelmingly prioritized education and parental guidance.

Nearly nine-in-10 parents and over eight-in-10 voters now support formal digital literacy initiatives, specifically calling for training on the responsible use of artificial intelligence. Glen Weiner, executive director of the Coalition to Empower our Future, stated that families need practical tools to navigate the digital landscape rather than silver-bullet policies. The findings indicate that the public views technology as an environment to be managed through engagement rather than a threat to be eliminated.
