US Progressives Demand Arms Embargo Following Israeli Strikes on Iran

Israeli forces launched at least five waves of airstrikes against targets in Tehran, Natanz, Isfahan, Arak, Tabriz, and Kermanshah. The IDF claimed the operation successfully assassinated IRGC Commander-in-Chief Major Gen. Hossein Salami and Chief of Staff Major Gen. Mohammad Bagheri, alongside several nuclear scientists. Reports from Iranian state media indicate that residential areas were also struck, resulting in civilian casualties, including women and children. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu characterized the campaign, dubbed Operation Rising Lion, as a preemptive strike, while President Isaac Herzog described the action as a necessary measure to neutralize an existential threat.

In Washington, the response from progressive circles was swift. Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib accused Netanyahu of dragging the United States into an unwanted war to maintain his own political survival. Representative Ilhan Omar echoed these concerns, noting that the strikes occurred just as diplomatic nuclear talks were set to resume. Advocacy groups including CodePink, the National Iranian American Council, and DAWN have called for an immediate arms embargo, arguing that unconditional U.S. backing enables unlawful aggression. While Secretary of State Marco Rubio denied U.S. involvement in the attacks, critics maintain that American taxpayer-funded weaponry is directly fueling the collapse of regional stability.
