Seaspan and Maersk Launch $75 Million Fleet Decarbonization Upgrade

A two-decade maritime partnership is shifting toward aggressive hardware retrofits as Seaspan and Maersk commit $75 million to upgrade 18 long-term chartered vessels. The initiative targets a 10–13% improvement in slot costs while integrating carbon capture readiness and structural enhancements to maximize cargo capacity across their shared fleet.

The core of the program focuses on four 13,000 TEU vessels, which will receive comprehensive technical overhauls. Engineering teams are installing shaft generators to curb auxiliary fuel consumption alongside high-efficiency propellers and pre-swirl devices to optimize propulsion. To improve loading economics, the companies are elevating lashing bridges and increasing vessel deadweight, effectively boosting both operational flexibility and cargo volume.

Beyond individual ship upgrades, the collaboration has expanded to include WattSpan and COSCO Shipyard. The group signed a memorandum establishing a one-year framework for information sharing and joint development of decarbonization technologies. This move signals a broader transition toward standardized efficiency measures, with Dimitrios Panagopoulos, Seaspan’s Chief Fleet Operations Officer, framing the investment as a necessary step to bridge current operational performance with future regulatory requirements. For Maersk, the upgrades serve a dual purpose: lowering greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining fleet competitiveness in an increasingly volatile global logistics market.
