Tribal Nations Anchor 104th Santa Fe Indian Market with Cultural Push

The 104th annual Santa Fe Indian Market, scheduled for August 2026, is shifting its focus toward national policy and cultural preservation. By securing major sponsorships from the Muscogee (Creek), Chickasaw, and Yuhaaviatam of San Manuel nations, the event has transformed into a strategic convening point for Indigenous advocacy and storytelling.

The Muscogee (Creek) Nation leads the programming as co-title sponsor, centering its involvement on the protection of sacred sites. On August 14, the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture will host a panel featuring filmmaker Sterlin Harjo and activist Dallas Goldtooth to discuss the ongoing struggle for Hickory Ground, a burial site currently at the heart of a legal and cultural preservation campaign. This discussion precedes a multimedia evening of music and performance, featuring former U.S. Poet Laureate Joy Harjo and actor Zahn McClarnon, designed to highlight the intersection of artistic expression and land advocacy.

Film and narrative reclamation also define this year’s agenda. The Yuhaaviatam of San Manuel Nation is sponsoring the Get Indigenous Film Festival, which includes a documentary showcase on the tribe's history. Meanwhile, the Chickasaw Nation and Cherokee Film are supporting panels aimed at bolstering Native representation in media. SWAIA Executive Director Jamie Schulze noted that these financial commitments from sovereign nations signal a broader evolution for the market, framing it as a vital hub for policy dialogue alongside its traditional role as an art exhibition. The 104th market aims to leverage this collective investment to drive both economic development and the preservation of traditions for future generations.
