Texas Court Dismisses Barratry Claims Against Quinn Emanuel

A Harris County district judge has dismissed a series of lawsuits targeting Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, siding with the firm in a high-stakes dispute involving free speech protections and attorney immunity. The ruling effectively halts litigation initiated by Houston trial lawyer Tony Buzbee against the firm and other co-defendants.

Texas Court Dismisses Barratry Claims Against Quinn Emanuel

The litigation, which began in December 2024, centered on allegations of barratry, tortious interference, and civil conspiracy. Tony Buzbee claimed that Quinn Emanuel, along with Roc Nation, LLC, and Mississippi attorney Marcy Croft, orchestrated a scheme to recruit his former clients and employees to file legal actions against him. These accusations emerged following a separate, public dispute between Buzbee and rapper Shawn Carter, known as Jay-Z.

Representing Quinn Emanuel, attorneys from Bradley successfully invoked the Texas Citizens' Participation Act (TCPA), the state’s anti-SLAPP statute designed to curb lawsuits intended to silence protected speech. Judge Kristen Hawkins of the 11th Judicial District Court granted the dismissal with prejudice on June 16 and 23. Beyond clearing the firm of all charges, the court ordered the recovery of reasonable attorneys' fees incurred during the defense. The victory underscores the strength of the attorney-immunity doctrine in Texas, which Bradley's legal team successfully argued shielded the firm from Buzbee's claims.
