Healey Intervenes as Historic Strike Grips Mass General Brigham

Governor Maura Healey summoned leadership from Mass General Brigham and the Massachusetts Nurses Association to the State House on Wednesday, seeking to break a deadlock in the largest healthcare strike in state history. Mayor Michelle Wu joined the effort to facilitate a resolution for 4,450 striking staff members.

Healey Intervenes as Historic Strike Grips Mass General Brigham

The emergency meeting follows a massive walkout involving 4,000 Brigham and Women’s Hospital nurses and 450 MGB Home Care clinicians. These workers, represented by the Massachusetts Nurses Association, demand contract terms they argue are vital to maintaining patient safety standards. The union maintains that its members are prepared to stay at the bargaining table until a fair agreement is signed, provided the hospital system matches their urgency.

While negotiations proceed at the State House, the strike continues to disrupt operations across the region. Picket lines remain active at the Brigham main campus on Francis Street and several satellite locations from Chestnut Hill to Foxborough. Simultaneously, the MGB Home Care unit—comprised of nurses, therapists, social workers, and dieticians—is picketing at sites in Beverly, Braintree, Chelsea, Newton, and Somerville. The hospital system has responded by initiating a four-day lockout of Brigham nurses, scheduled to run from July 9 through July 13.
