Taipei Cultural Center in New York Marks 35 Years of Creative Diplomacy

The July 7 reception at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office brought together representatives from institutions including the Museum of Modern Art and the Bushwick Collective. The event highlighted the center’s evolution from its 1991 founding into a vital conduit for Taiwanese performing arts, film, and literature within the American cultural landscape. Director Jack Kuei and Director-General Tom Chih-Chiang Lee framed the anniversary not merely as a retrospective, but as a strategic pivot toward broader public engagement.

Central to this new chapter is the Taiwan POP program, which has filled the city with Taiwanese creative work since May. From Nymphia Wind’s participation in the NYC Pride March to the ongoing residency of choreographer Lin Hwai-min, the initiative aims to move beyond traditional gallery settings into the city’s public spaces. The evening concluded with a performance by Indigenous Paiwan singer Sauljaljui, underscoring the program’s focus on the diverse, contemporary voices shaping Taiwan’s identity today. Upcoming events, including the HUNG DANCE premiere and a film series at Metrograph, continue the center’s mission to integrate Taiwanese culture into the daily rhythm of New York City through September.
