Ten Steps to Secure Your Home Before Summer Travel

Nearly two-thirds of summer travelers admit their homes are vulnerable while they are away, according to data from Mercury Insurance. With risks ranging from water damage to theft, experts suggest that a brief pre-departure routine is the most effective way to prevent costly property losses.

Ten Steps to Secure Your Home Before Summer Travel

Preparing a property for an extended absence does not require significant time, yet it serves as a critical defense against common household emergencies. Larry Anderson, director of underwriting operations at Mercury Insurance, emphasizes that simple habits—such as managing water supplies, creating the illusion of occupancy, and coordinating with trusted neighbors—drastically improve security.

To minimize risk, homeowners should secure every entry point, including second-story windows and detached structures. Managing the home’s appearance is equally vital; utilizing smart-home timers for lighting and pausing mail deliveries prevents the property from signaling vacancy. Internally, shutting off the main water supply can avert catastrophic damage from minor plumbing failures, while adjusting thermostats saves energy. Finally, experts advise against posting real-time vacation photos on social media, as this inadvertently broadcasts that a residence is empty. Verifying insurance coverage and having a contact plan ensures that if an issue does arise, it can be addressed before evolving into a major repair bill.
