Silacci joined the estate in 2001 as Director of Viticulture and Enology, later ascending to the lead winemaking role. His tenure was defined by a holistic approach that bridged the gap between vineyard management and cellar operations. Under his direction, the winery adopted regenerative farming techniques, including no-till methods and cover cropping, while prioritizing the restoration of land along the Napa River. These efforts were central to maintaining the founding vision established by Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi in 1978.

Michael Silacci to Step Down as Opus One Winemaker
After a quarter-century of defining the estate’s viticulture, Michael Silacci announced his retirement from Opus One, effective after the 2026 harvest. His departure marks the end of an era for the Oakville-based winery, where he served as the sole winemaker since 2003 and oversaw the evolution of its signature Bordeaux-style blend.
CEO Chris Lynch credited Silacci with elevating the estate's quality and integrating modern innovation with the winery's traditional foundations. As the search for a successor begins in early 2027, Silacci will remain with the organization to manage the transition. This change follows the winery's established practice of deliberate succession, intended to preserve the continuity of its mission and the specific character of its Napa Valley terroir.
