How to Opt Out of Meta's New AI Image Generation Tool

Meta’s newly launched Muse Image feature allows users to pull photos from any public Instagram account to create AI-generated content without the original owner's permission. While the tool aims to simplify creative editing, it has sparked immediate backlash regarding user consent, digital privacy, and the potential for non-consensual image manipulation.

The feature automatically includes public profile content, leaving users unaware that their photos are being repurposed by strangers. Unless an account is set to private or belongs to a minor, Meta does not provide notifications when images are incorporated into AI creations. Critics argue this lack of transparency exacerbates existing public skepticism, noting that a Pew Research Center survey found 35% of respondents feel more concerned than excited about the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence.

To restrict your content, navigate to your profile settings, select the three-line menu, and tap "Sharing and reuse." From there, you can toggle off the "Allow people to create with and reuse your content" option for both posts and reels. This safeguard is particularly relevant given Meta’s history with data privacy, most notably the 2019 $5 billion FTC fine following the Cambridge Analytica scandal, which centered on unauthorized access to millions of user profiles.
