NYC Mayor Mamdani Renews Calls to Abolish ICE After Fatal Houston Shooting

The fatal shooting of 52-year-old Lorenzo Salgado Araujo by a federal immigration agent in Houston has ignited a fierce confrontation over federal enforcement tactics. As grieving family members and civil rights advocates challenge the official narrative, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has renewed his urgent call to abolish ICE.

NYC Mayor Mamdani Renews Calls to Abolish ICE After Fatal Houston Shooting

Salgado, a husband and father of three who was in the process of legalizing his status, was killed Tuesday morning in the Magnolia Park neighborhood while picking up his construction crew. While Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials claimed the man attempted to evade arrest and threatened agents with his vehicle, that account is being aggressively contested. Surveillance footage and eyewitness reports have prompted local leaders and the victim’s family to demand an immediate, independent investigation into the killing.

A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson later admitted that neither Salgado nor his passengers were the intended targets of the operation, noting that agents simply suspected one occupant resembled a wanted man from Guatemala. This incident follows a string of fatalities involving ICE and Department of Homeland Security agents, including the deaths of Silverio Villegas González, Ruben Ray Martinez, Renee Good, and Alex Pretti during the current administration's intensified crackdown on undocumented immigrants.

The fallout has reached an international level, with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announcing plans to file criminal complaints regarding Mexican nationals who have died in U.S. custody. Tensions are further exacerbated by the recent rescinding of a 2021 policy that previously required congressional notification and mandatory investigations into deaths occurring within 30 days of a detainee's release.
