Chemical Industry Hits Third Straight Year of Record Safety Lows

For the third year running, companies under the American Chemistry Council’s Responsible Care initiative have hit record-low injury and illness rates. The data, released Wednesday in Washington, highlights a sustained decline in incident rates across U.S. chemical manufacturing, signaling a shift in how firms identify and mitigate workplace risks.

Chemical Industry Hits Third Straight Year of Record Safety Lows

The American Chemistry Council reports that the total recordable incident rate for its member companies has dropped more than 26% since 2017. By making participation in the program a mandatory condition of membership, the council forces transparent reporting, allowing firms to benchmark their performance against both internal history and broader market standards. These practitioners currently report safety metrics five times better than the general manufacturing sector and three times safer than the wider chemistry industry.

Chris Jahn, President and CEO of the ACC, frames this trend as a pillar of American industrial growth. The strategy relies on learning from both internal incidents and industry-wide events to tighten operational protocols. Mitch Toomey, Vice President of Responsible Care & Stewardship, noted that the focus remains on preventing incidents before they occur by strengthening safety systems from frontline operations up to executive leadership. As regulatory scrutiny of the chemical sector intensifies, the council is positioning these metrics as proof that voluntary, data-driven oversight remains an effective tool for hazard reduction.
