Eliud Kipchoge Brings Elite Training Tech to Brazilian Marathon Streets

Two-time Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge returned to Porto Alegre this July, trading the anonymity of lab-tested gear for a public demonstration of the HUAWEI WATCH GT Runner 2. The marathon legend used the device during the NB42K race, marking a symbolic homecoming to the site of his 2016 gold medal win.

The integration of professional-grade GPS and full-marathon monitoring has historically remained locked behind the gates of elite coaching staffs. Huawei aims to dismantle that barrier by packaging lab-level positioning into a commercial wearable. Kipchoge, who collaborated directly with the development team at dsm-firmenich, serves as the primary validator for these features, ensuring the technology functions under the grueling conditions of a 42.195 km race.

Central to the device is an Intelligent Marathon mode that functions as a real-time coach. During his run in Porto Alegre, Kipchoge utilized the virtual pacer—a feature that provides an on-screen avatar to track pace deviations. While elite athletes like Kipchoge use these insights to fine-tune strategy on flat, fast courses, the manufacturer intends for recreational runners to employ the same data to manage exertion and recovery. By putting this equipment to the test in Brazil, the project highlights a shift toward democratizing sports science for the broader athletic community.
