Welch's Targets Adult Appetites with Larger Frozen PB&Js

Welch's is moving into the freezer aisle with a new line of sandwiches designed to address a common consumer complaint: traditional options are simply too small. The company’s new Real PB&Js, now available at select Walmart locations, aim to offer more substance for adults seeking a quick, protein-rich snack.

The new product line features sandwiches that are 50% larger than the current 2oz industry standard, packing 12 grams of protein into every serving. According to Andrew Hartshorn, Welch's Chief Brand and Innovation Officer, the development was driven by direct consumer feedback requesting a more filling version of the classic lunchbox staple. The sandwiches are crafted using real bread, creamy peanut butter, and the company's signature fruit spreads, notably excluding high fructose corn syrup and artificial colors.

Available in Concord Grape, Strawberry, and a new Mixed Fruit flavor, the sandwiches are sold in six-count boxes at a retail price of $8.87. This initial rollout at Walmart serves as a test market for the brand, with plans to expand distribution to additional retailers in 2027. By leveraging its long-standing reputation for fruit-based products, the Waltham-based cooperative hopes to capture the growing demand for convenient, ready-to-eat snacks that do not sacrifice ingredient quality for speed.
