At 82, Judy Benjamin Walks 650 Miles to Defy Alzheimer’s Diagnosis

Setting off from Land’s End on August 1, 82-year-old Dr. Judy Benjamin begins a 650-mile trek across England. A diagnosed Alzheimer’s survivor since 2011, she aims to prove that cognitive decline is not a final verdict, advocating for precision medicine and lifestyle interventions as tools for recovery and prevention.

Benjamin’s route will wind through Cornwall, Devon, Winchester, and the South Downs before concluding in Central London this September. Her mission centers on the ReCODE Protocol, a personalized program developed by neurologist Dr. Dale Bredesen that prioritizes nutrition, sleep, and metabolic health. Having watched her mother and four uncles succumb to the disease, Benjamin views this journey as a direct challenge to the fatalistic outlook often presented to patients after a diagnosis.

This cross-country effort builds upon her 2025 milestone, when she became the first person with an Alzheimer’s diagnosis to walk 2,790 miles across the United States. Dr. Bredesen, who has worked closely with Benjamin, notes that her resilience serves as a global benchmark for what is possible when cognitive health is addressed through comprehensive, root-cause intervention. Supported by the Alzheimer’s Survivors Foundation and various corporate sponsors, Benjamin intends for each mile to amplify the message that early intervention can change the trajectory of the condition for the millions currently living with dementia.
