VIAVI Secures $1.1 Million Grant for 6G Cybersecurity Research

As quantum-enabled cyber threats shift from theoretical risks to imminent dangers, VIAVI Solutions has secured $1.1 million in funding from the European Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking. The investment tasks the firm with building AI-driven security models for next-generation networks before commercial signals even go live.

VIAVI Secures $1.1 Million Grant for 6G Cybersecurity Research

The company will spearhead the development of digital twins using its TeraVM AI RAN Scenario Generator. By creating realistic network datasets, the project aims to train security systems to detect anomalies and neutralize vulnerabilities within 6G architectures. This work is part of the broader SHIELD-6G initiative, a competitive research program designed to establish robust security protocols for future connectivity.

Ian Langley, senior vice president of VIAVI’s wireless and security unit, emphasized that security must be integrated into the foundation of 6G infrastructure rather than added as an afterthought. The project brings together a consortium led by University College Dublin, including industry heavyweights such as Ericsson, Nokia, and Thales, alongside operators Telefónica and LMT of Latvia. This collaboration aims to synchronize security, orchestration, and regulatory compliance across the entire 6G ecosystem.
