Alison Wood Brooks Brings the Science of Conversation to MasterClass

“Conversation isn't a talent. It's a skill. And most of us were never taught it,” says Harvard Business School professor Alison Wood Brooks. As the platform launches her new course, The Conversation Advantage, the behavioral scientist aims to replace social anxiety with a rigorous, evidence-based system for high-stakes human interaction.

Alison Wood Brooks Brings the Science of Conversation to MasterClass

MasterClass is betting that human connection can be taught like any other technical discipline. Brooks, author of TALK: The Science of Conversation and the Art of Being Ourselves, designed the curriculum to move students past the universal crutch of small talk. By applying behavioral research to everyday dilemmas—such as what to do when your mind goes blank or how to navigate a disagreement without escalating tension—the course offers a roadmap for more intentional communication.

The program introduces specific frameworks, including the CALM method for difficult dialogues and the topic pyramid for deepening connections. To support these lessons, the company released a companion web tool called Not the Weather App. It functions as a digital nudge, providing context-specific conversation tips instead of meteorological data. For Brooks, the goal is to bridge the gap between social paralysis and professional confidence, treating the ability to communicate as the most critical, yet overlooked, tool in a modern toolkit.
