Dr. Nelson currently serves as President of the American Board of Allergy and Immunology and leads the Asthma, Allergy, and Clinical Immunology Division at the University of Virginia. His previous tenure on the ABMS Board of Directors and his work with the Vision for the Future Commission on Continuing Certification position him to steer the organization’s ongoing assessment programs. Beyond his academic role, he has shaped policy through advisory positions with the Food and Drug Administration and the American Medical Association.

Michael R. Nelson Named Chair-Elect of ABMS Board
The American Board of Medical Specialties has appointed Michael R. Nelson, MD, PhD, as the new Chair-Elect of its Board of Directors. A veteran of the U.S. Army and current leader at the University of Virginia, Nelson steps into the role to oversee national standards for physician certification.

His career includes 25 years of military service, culminating in his retirement from the U.S. Army in 2019. During his service, he held key roles including Chief Consultant to the U.S. Army Surgeon General and Director of Army Graduate Medical Education. ABMS President Richard E. Hawkins noted that Nelson’s extensive background in clinical leadership and military medical education will be central to the organization's mission. Alongside this appointment, the board added Colleen M. Conry, representing the American Board of Family Medicine, and Heather O'Hara-Rand, representing the American Board of Preventive Medicine, to its roster.
