Hind Rajab and Rescuers Found Dead in Gaza After Desperate Plea

The decomposing body of six-year-old Hind Rajab was discovered Saturday in a bullet-ridden, tank-crushed car in Gaza. She lay alongside the remains of her family and two paramedics who were killed by Israeli fire while attempting to reach her after a harrowing, hours-long phone plea for help.

The child’s plight gained international urgency after the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) released audio of her 15-year-old cousin, Layan Hamadeh, describing a tank approaching their vehicle in the Tal al-Hawa neighborhood on January 29. Hamadeh’s account ended abruptly with screams and gunfire. While the rest of the family members in the car were killed instantly, Rajab initially survived with wounds to her back and hand.

For hours, the young girl stayed on the line with PRCS dispatcher Rana al-Faqeh, begging for rescue and expressing her fear of the dark. The PRCS coordinated with Israeli officials, receiving authorization to send an ambulance to the site. Despite this clearance, the rescue vehicle was struck by fire, killing paramedics Yusuf Zeino and Ahmed Al-Madhoun. PRCS spokesperson Nebal Farsakh stated that the crew had been marked with clear Red Cross emblems and had been under the impression they were moving into a safe corridor. The Israel Defense Forces stated they are currently investigating the incident.

Following the discovery, Hind’s mother, Wissam Najab, publicly condemned those she holds responsible for the loss of her daughter. The incident has drawn sharp criticism from human rights advocates, who cite it as a broader symptom of the ongoing conflict. According to Gaza health officials, more than 28,000 Palestinians have been killed since October 7, with at least 12,150 of those victims being children.
