UN Expert Francesca Albanese Defies Pressure Over Gaza Genocide Claims

“I call it genocide because IT IS a genocide,” declared UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese on Tuesday. Pushing back against years of criticism from Israeli officials and U.S. political figures, the Italian legal scholar insisted that her characterization of the conflict in Gaza is a documented fact rather than an opinion.

Albanese, a Georgetown University academic, argues that the ongoing destruction in Gaza meets the strict legal criteria set forth in Article II of the Genocide Convention. Her latest remarks follow a series of international legal actions, including ongoing proceedings at the International Court of Justice and arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defense minister Yoav Gallant.

The Human Toll and International Complicity

In a recorded statement, the rapporteur cited figures indicating that nearly 60,000 people have been killed, with the death toll from disease and starvation potentially reaching 300,000. She condemned the systematic destruction of critical infrastructure, including hospitals and water networks, while accusing Western nations—most notably the United States—of being complicit in what she termed an “axis of genocide.” Despite facing frequent accusations of antisemitism from both Democratic and Republican lawmakers, Albanese maintains that the failure of the international community to acknowledge the process of annihilation underway in Gaza represents a profound collapse of shared humanity.
