Sonoma County Fire Projects Shield Critical Water Infrastructure

Four acres of fire-prone eucalyptus trees were cleared near the Montebello site, a strategic move by the Sonoma County Fire District to protect essential water infrastructure. This collaborative effort secures two 400,000-gallon storage tanks and a backup generator vital for emergency firefighting operations in the Larkfield-Mark West area.

Sonoma County Fire Projects Shield Critical Water Infrastructure

The vegetation reduction initiative, finalized this July, targeted hazardous brush surrounding California American Water facilities. By thinning out flammable growth in the Larkfield-Mark West district, the Sonoma County Fire District aimed to create a robust buffer zone for neighborhood safety and utility stability. Sarah Leeper, president of California American Water, credited the success to a coalition of local property owners, county agencies, and contractors who prioritized the hardening of these assets against wildfire threats.

Beyond the Montebello clearing, crews extended their efforts to the nearby Wikiup facility. These modifications expand defensible space around infrastructure that supports thousands of residents, ensuring service continuity during high-risk fire conditions. The project serves as a model for regional cooperation, integrating utility-led funding with specialized fire management expertise to mitigate environmental risks in Sonoma County.
