BHP Hits Iron Ore Milestone as Copper Production Retreats

A record-breaking year for BHP Group’s iron ore output has been tempered by a dip in copper production, with the world’s largest miner signaling further declines as ore grades at its flagship Chilean site dwindle.

BHP Hits Iron Ore Milestone as Copper Production Retreats

Copper production fell to 1.95 million metric tons for the fiscal year ended June 30, a 3% decrease that aligns with analyst expectations. While the company pivots toward copper to feed demand for data centers and renewable energy, it anticipates output between 1.65 million and 1.80 million tons for the coming year. This contraction stems largely from aging infrastructure at Escondida, the world’s largest copper mine, where metal concentration is naturally diminishing.

Conversely, the iron ore division achieved a record 264.7 million tons, buoyed by strong performance at the South Flank mine in Western Australia and strategic stockpile drawdowns. Chief Executive Brandon Craig noted that higher realized prices for both commodities bolstered results, even as inflation and rising diesel costs pressured margins. Despite these gains, labor friction persists; workers at the Port Hedland export terminal are slated for an eight-hour strike following a breakdown in wage negotiations, though the company maintains that contingency plans will keep operations running.
