U.S. Small Businesses Turn to Global Hiring Amid AI Talent Shortage

Seventy-six percent of small and medium-sized businesses report that H-1B visa restrictions are actively disrupting their workforce planning. Facing a domestic shortage of AI-skilled labor, these companies are increasingly abandoning traditional relocation models in favor of remote-first hiring strategies to secure the expertise required to remain competitive.

U.S. Small Businesses Turn to Global Hiring Amid AI Talent Shortage

A report from Multiplier, incorporating data from TriNet’s State of the Workplace study, reveals that 87% of U.S. SMBs now view hiring outside their zip code as a fundamental necessity rather than a luxury. This pivot is driven by the rapid integration of artificial intelligence, which 60% of surveyed decision-makers identify as a primary catalyst for their current recruitment needs. By hiring talent where they live instead of sponsoring costly, complex relocations, firms hope to bypass the immigration backlogs and rising expenses associated with domestic visa sponsorship.

However, the transition presents significant operational hurdles. Small organizations often lack the specialized HR infrastructure required to navigate international employment laws. Only 21% of SMBs report proactive management of cross-border compliance, while 82% acknowledge they have either failed or expect to fail during the onboarding process due to tax and regulatory complexities. TriNet Chief People Officer Catherine Wragg noted that while the shift to global talent is essential for growth, the risk of non-compliance remains a significant barrier for companies lacking the right support systems. As a result, usage of platforms like Multiplier has climbed 16.4% since April 2024, signaling a permanent change in how smaller enterprises approach their human capital requirements.
