DoorDash brings command-line ordering to developers

Developers can now automate their lunch orders through a terminal interface thanks to the new dd-cli tool. DoorDash launched the limited beta for macOS users in the U.S. and Canada, allowing AI agents to search for local deals, browse store menus, and process checkouts directly from a command line.

The tool, announced by co-founder and CTO Andy Fang, marks a shift toward agentic commerce. While the concept of using a terminal to order a sandwich feels like a nod to classic programmer humor—specifically the famous XKCD comic about forced automation—the underlying technology serves a practical purpose. By exposing its ordering platform to AI agents, DoorDash enables developers to integrate food and grocery delivery services into their own custom software and workflows.

Participants in the beta are currently being vetted through a waitlist, with the company asking applicants to outline the specific tools they intend to build. This effort builds on the company's existing AI-driven initiatives, including the Ask DoorDash chatbot and integrations with platforms like ChatGPT and Claude. For now, the demonstration video shows the CLI parsing JSON and running Python scripts to order salads, proving that while the interface is built for efficiency, the process remains as complex as any other piece of software development.
