John Fetterman Urged Israeli President to Pardon Benjamin Netanyahu

Senator John Fetterman has privately pressured Israeli President Isaac Herzog to grant a pardon to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, arguing that the leader’s ongoing corruption trial hinders his ability to manage national security. The request, made in a December 2 letter, aligns the Pennsylvania Democrat with Donald Trump’s parallel push for clemency.

In the correspondence obtained by Talking Points Memo, Fetterman contended that in a dangerous global climate, no democracy should force its head of government to spend days in a courtroom rather than a situation room. He framed the potential pardon as a measure to secure the future rather than a move to erase the past. When confronted by reporters regarding the leak, Fetterman did not deny the request, stating he fully supports the position and dismissing the disclosure as a distraction.

Netanyahu currently faces domestic charges of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust, alongside an outstanding arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes in Gaza. Fetterman, who has received over $370,000 from pro-Israel groups like AIPAC, has maintained staunch support for the Israeli government throughout the conflict. Critics, including journalist Etan Nechin, have characterized the intervention as profoundly cynical, noting that Netanyahu’s political survival has been linked to the prolongation of the war and the delayed release of hostages held by Hamas.
