Waymo Halts San Francisco Service Following Power Grid Failure

A widespread power outage affecting roughly 7,000 PG&E customers in San Francisco has forced Waymo to suspend its robotaxi operations. The Alphabet-owned company confirmed temporary service adjustments as local infrastructure struggles, leaving commuters without access to autonomous transit during the ongoing utility failure.

Users attempting to hail vehicles reported notifications stating that service is temporarily paused and freeway routes are currently unavailable. A company spokesperson confirmed the shift, noting that the firm is monitoring local conditions to determine when normal operations can safely resume.

This incident adds to a recurring pattern of technical instability for the fleet during regional blackouts. Waymo vehicles previously stalled during a December power failure and caused significant traffic congestion near the Golden Gate Bridge during a holiday fireworks display. These repeated disruptions have prompted San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie to demand stricter state oversight, specifically regarding how autonomous platforms function during major urban emergencies.
