With the 2.13 network upgrade, NEAR Protocol has become one of the first major blockchains to implement NIST-approved post-quantum signing in a live production environment. The release also introduces dynamic resharding, allowing the network to scale its capacity automatically as transaction demand grows without requiring manual validator intervention.

Simultaneously, the introduction of dynamic resharding removes the bottlenecks previously associated with network expansion. Historically, scaling the NEAR network required complex, multi-week protocol upgrades and validator coordination. Under the new system, shards split automatically once they reach defined state-size thresholds, a process completed within roughly 1.5 epochs. This capability is expected to support the infrastructure demands of the emerging agent economy, which industry projections estimate could reach $5 trillion in global volume by 2030. Co-founder Illia Polosukhin noted that the platform’s original account model was designed specifically to accommodate these long-term cryptographic and scalability requirements.
