Colossal Biosciences Targets Valuation Up to $30 Billion

Five years after its founding, the de-extinction startup Colossal Biosciences is reportedly seeking a massive capital injection that would push its market valuation as high as $30 billion. The move signals a rapid shift for a company once defined solely by its experimental efforts to resurrect the woolly mammoth.

The company has moved beyond mere genetic research, transitioning into a multi-faceted commercial operation. While the startup previously relied on venture backing to fund its ambitious "resurrection" projects, it has begun generating revenue over the past year. This financial pivot is supported by partnerships with the U.S. government and the UAE, the latter of which recently committed $60 million to the firm.

Central to this valuation surge is the company's aggressive spin-off strategy. Colossal has launched three distinct ventures: the plastic-degradation firm Breaking, the computational biology platform Form Bio, and the AI-driven modeling company Astromech, which reached a $2 billion valuation in March. CEO Ben Lamm is also preparing to commercialize artificial womb technology, a project with potential applications in human fertility. Should the company successfully reintroduce extinct species like the dodo bird to native habitats, it aims to capitalize on a market for biodiversity credits, mirroring the structure of existing carbon credit systems.
