Kyoto’s Rege Nephro Secures $10.6 Million for Kidney Therapy Pipeline

Kyoto-based biotechnology firm Rege Nephro has raised approximately US$10.6 million through a J-KISS share acquisition round. The capital injection arrives as the company transitions its primary candidate for polycystic kidney disease, RN-014, toward commercialization while simultaneously pushing its regenerative medicine program, RN-032, into nonclinical testing stages.

The financing round drew support from a broad syndicate of investors, including JAFCO Group, Mitsubishi UFJ Capital, and Kyoto University Innovation Capital. This capital infusion is earmarked to sustain the firm’s growth trajectory leading up to an anticipated Series C financing. For Rege Nephro, the timing aligns with the completion of the Phase 2a clinical trial for RN-014, a small-molecule drug developed via iPS cell-derived disease modeling. Data analysis for the trial is currently in progress.

Beyond the lead candidate, the company is scaling its organizational capacity to support the advancement of RN-032, which utilizes renal nephron progenitor cells. Rege Nephro intends to deploy the funds across four strategic pillars: securing global licensing for RN-014, initiating nonclinical trials for RN-032, expanding discovery research into next-generation regeneration, and increasing headcount in scientific and business development roles. CEO Akifumi Morinaka noted that the funding confirms investor confidence in the company’s vision of using iPS cell technology to address significant gaps in existing kidney disease treatments.
