The deployment fulfills a strategic agreement signed in September 2025 under the oversight of the Central Bank of Egypt and the People's Bank of China. By integrating UnionPay into its existing infrastructure, Paymob enables businesses—ranging from luxury hospitality and retail to transport services—to process international payments without the friction of cash exchanges. This transition supports the Central Bank of Egypt’s push toward a modernized, cash-lite digital economy.

UnionPay and Paymob Launch Massive POS Expansion in Egypt
Over 160,000 point-of-sale terminals across Egypt now accept UnionPay cards, following a rapid eight-month rollout led by financial services firm Paymob. The partnership connects local merchants to a vast network of international cardholders, aiming to capture high-spending global tourism and business traffic.

According to Feng Chen, General Manager of UnionPay International, the initiative provides local enterprises with a direct channel to elite international purchasing power. For merchants in tourism hubs and commercial centers, the shift simplifies the transaction process, allowing them to offer a familiar payment experience to visitors. As cross-border trade and tourism arrivals grow, the companies intend to continue expanding acceptance capabilities to maximize revenue opportunities for Egyptian businesses.
