The acquisition is designed to address surging travel demand across regional and international routes. According to CEO Ato Girma Wake, the fleet expansion will facilitate stronger trade, tourism, and cargo growth, allowing the airline to connect Uganda more efficiently to markets across the Middle East, Asia, and Europe. Uganda Airlines Expands Fleet with First Boeing Order
At the Farnborough International Airshow, Uganda Airlines finalized its first-ever deal with Boeing for eight new aircraft. The order, consisting of four 737-8s and four 787-9 Dreamliners, signals a strategic pivot for the national carrier as it seeks to transform Entebbe into a central aviation hub for East Africa.
Beyond simple fleet growth, the agreement focuses on technical training and operational capacity. Boeing’s senior vice president of commercial sales, Brad McMullen, noted that the new models will provide the airline with increased versatility and efficiency. The transition to these aircraft is projected to reduce fuel consumption by 20–25% compared to the planes they are set to replace. Currently operating out of Entebbe, the airline serves 17 destinations across 13 countries.
