OPW Breaks Ground on 144,000-Square-Foot Smithfield Facility
Under a clear North Carolina sky, executives from OPW and ARCO Design/Build gathered on July 17 to mark the start of construction on a new manufacturing hub in Smithfield. The project adds 143,940 square feet to the company’s existing local footprint, aiming to meet rising global demand for fuel-handling technology.
ARCO Design/Build secured the contract by shifting the project from a traditional procurement model to an integrated design-build approach. Mike Moriarty, Director of Business Development at ARCO, noted that this strategy provided the necessary certainty regarding cost and project timelines. For OPW, the move is a strategic play to bolster its manufacturing footprint and improve operational efficiency. Greg Kennedy, Vice President of Operations at OPW, described the expansion as a direct vote of confidence in the region's industrial momentum. With 22 projects already completed in Johnston County, ARCO continues to be a dominant force in local industrial development, managing over 4.4 million square feet of construction in the area to date.
