WDIV Local 4 Opens Hybrid Newsroom and Coffee Shop in Plymouth

The project represents a shift in local media strategy, moving reporters from behind the anchor desk and into the daily rhythm of the neighborhood. By partnering with Detroit-based roaster Great Lakes Coffee, the station has created a space designed to lower the barrier between journalists and the public. Rather than treating the location as a temporary pop-up, the station intends for the shop to serve as a consistent, physical touchpoint where residents can voice community concerns or pitch stories face-to-face.

Stephanie Slagle, Vice President and General Manager of WDIV Local 4, emphasized that the initiative is built on the necessity of direct engagement. According to Slagle, the goal is to cultivate community trust by creating a neutral, accessible environment for dialogue. The station plans to use the space to gather coverage from Plymouth, Canton, Northville, Novi, and Livonia, effectively turning the cafe into a front-line desk for regional news. The facility will maintain regular hours from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and Saturdays, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays.
