Cymat Technologies to Acquire Rio Tinto's Aluminum Composites Business

Cymat Technologies has finalized a commercial agreement to absorb the proprietary aluminum metal matrix composites business of Rio Tinto Alcan. The deal marks a strategic exit for Rio Tinto after 40 years of operation, while providing the Mississauga-based manufacturer with a new, high-volume product line and a broader customer base.

Cymat Technologies to Acquire Rio Tinto's Aluminum Composites Business

The agreement allows Cymat to transition Rio Tinto’s existing customer base—primarily European brake disk manufacturers—into its own operations. By integrating this production into its Mississauga facility, Cymat aims to leverage its existing expertise in stabilized aluminum foam to manufacture metal matrix composites (MMC), a ceramic-infused aluminum valued for its extreme wear-resistance in the automotive and rail sectors. To support this transition, Cymat plans to invest approximately $2 million in equipment, with full commissioning expected by early Q2 2027.

Financial projections suggest the acquisition could generate $7.5 million to $10 million in incremental annual revenue. Beyond the immediate sales volume, the move addresses evolving environmental regulations; European Union Euro 7 standards, which mandate reductions in brake-related dust emissions, have spurred demand for MMC as a lighter, cleaner alternative to traditional cast iron disks. Cymat expects the integration to lower its own material input costs and accelerate its path to profitability, supported by a partnership with US-based producer MC21 to deploy advanced manufacturing technology.
