A 5.2% surge in the PHLX Semiconductor Index powered a broad U.S. market rally on Tuesday, helping the Nasdaq Composite climb 1.29% to 25837.21. Chip Stocks Lead Market Rebound Ahead of Tech Earnings

The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 385.38 points to close at 52224.64, while the S&P 500 rose 0.89% to 7509.20. Beyond the tech sector, individual corporate performance drove significant volatility. 3M shares jumped 7.3% following an 11% profit increase, and General Motors climbed 4.9% after raising its profit guidance. Meanwhile, Utz Brands soared 89% after announcing plans to be taken private by Germany’s Intersnack Group.

Commodity prices and geopolitical tensions provided a backdrop to the session. Brent crude hit $91.01 a barrel, its highest point since mid-June, amid warnings from Goldman Sachs that prolonged closures in the Strait of Hormuz could push prices above $120. In the financial sector, Charles Schwab reported a 32% profit jump to $2.8 billion, fueled by record trading volumes of 11.9 million daily trades. Despite the market optimism, JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon remained cautious, warning that current stock prices and high corporate profits may not align with the reality of long-term AI investment returns or persistent inflation.

Trade policy remains a looming factor for investors. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer signaled that the administration is preparing new tariffs on approximately 60 countries, while Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is pushing to finalize a deal to avoid a 50% U.S. tariff on $20 billion in Canadian exports scheduled for August 19. Market participants are now turning their attention to Wednesday’s earnings releases from Alphabet, Tesla, and IBM.
