House Committee Advances Border Security Bill to Curb Executive Discretion

The House Judiciary Committee has advanced an updated version of H.R. 2, the Secure Border Act, signaling a renewed push to codify immigration enforcement. With the legislation now heading to the full House, the Federation for American Immigration Reform is pressuring leadership to secure a floor vote before the upcoming midterm elections.

House Committee Advances Border Security Bill to Curb Executive Discretion

The bill aims to dismantle the administrative loopholes that proponents argue fueled record levels of illegal immigration during the previous administration. By restricting the federal government’s authority to grant parole to inadmissible foreign nationals, the measure seeks to mandate detention and return protocols, effectively stripping future administrations of the broad discretionary powers currently used to process entries.

Dale Wilcox, executive director of the Federation for American Immigration Reform, characterized the committee's vote as a vital step toward fulfilling campaign mandates set during the 2024 election cycle. He urged Speaker Mike Johnson to expedite the process, noting that the window for legislative action in the 119th Congress is rapidly closing. The strategy shifts the burden to the Senate, where proponents hope to force a public accounting of members' positions on the border issue before voters head to the polls this fall.
