Ubon Ratchathani Candle Festival Elevated to Signature Thailand Event

The Tourism Authority of Thailand has designated the 125th Ubon Ratchathani Candle Procession as a Signature Thailand Event, marking a strategic effort to amplify local Buddhist traditions through contemporary light installations and interactive cultural programming scheduled from July 25 through July 31.

Rooted in the Buddhist Lent tradition, the festival has expanded from a local ritual into a major exhibition of regional craftsmanship. This year, the province will showcase 47 elaborate wax sculptures, categorized into traditional, moulded-wax, and carved-wax designs. The event aims to draw international attention by blending centuries-old artistry with modern pop culture, notably through the inclusion of illuminated 'Nong Mamuang' character landmarks at Lan Thian Chaloem Phra Kiat.

TAT Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool stated that the initiative seeks to extend visitor stays and distribute economic benefits to local artisans. Beyond the main procession, the program features hands-on workshops at the TAT ART SPACE, allowing guests to participate in gold-leaf decoration and wax-flower making. The festivities culminate in a series of light-and-sound performances, including the 'Amazing Light of Isan: Stunned' production, while award-winning sculptures remain on public display through early August.
